Bodhgaya History

India Buddhism BookingHistory : According to Buddhist traditions, after leaving his home Prince Gautama Siddhartha, while wondering came to the banks of river Falgu near the city of Gaya in 500 B.C. There under a Peepal tree he sat to meditate on the excesses of life and to develop the philosophy of a balanced approach towards it.

After three days and three nights of meditation, Siddharta attained enlightenment and insight. Enlightened by the new thought, he spent seven weeks at seven different spots in the vicinity meditating and considering his experience. After seven weeks, he traveled to Sarnath, where he began teaching Buddhism.

Disciples of Gautama Siddhartha began to visit the place where he had gained enlightenment during the full moon in the month of Vaisakh (April-May). Over time, the place became known as Bodh Gaya, the day of enlightenment as Buddha Purnima, and the tree as the Bodhi Tree.

Many inscriptions and pilgrimage accounts tell the history of Bodhgaya including the pioneering works of the Chinese pilgrims like Faxian in and Xuanzang in the 5th century and 7th century respectively.
