Rajgir History

RajgirRajgir, situated 60 kms from Patna has got its name from Raj Griha meaning abode of the king. It is one of the most famous pilgrimages of Buddhists in India. Its craggy peaks and sheer mountains, dry forests and silent ruins evoke memories of the Buddha at almost every turn. The city was the entity of Magadh Empire. Lord Buddha lived for 12 years in the city. It was Rajgir that lord Buddha delivered some of his legendary sermons. Rajgir has witnessed a glorious and legendary past. The city is also renowned for its health and winter resort with its warm water ponds.

  • Air Patna is the nearest airport, which is 100 kms from Rajgir. The airport is linked to both international and domestic flights.
  • Rail The nearest station is Bakhtiarpur to reach Rajgir. Bakhtiarpur is 54 kms from Rajgir. A loop line connects Rajgir to Nalanda which is 15 kms away,
  • Road Rajgir can be easily accessible by road as it is well connect to the roads. It is 100kms from Patna and 46 kms from Bodhgaya. One can take bus, a coach or a private taxi, or car from there.

Best time to visit : The best time to visit Rajgir is October to March.

Climate and Temperature : The climate of Rajgir is extreme like other parts of the Gangatic plains. April-July is the hottest and humid months. The temperature may rise up to 45 degree Celsius and humidity for about 80%. Generally the winters have cold nights the temperature may goes to 10 degree Celsius. The town has very pleasant monsoon which comes in July-August and stays till September.

Dining : The city has no restaurant and only the hotels of the city have their own restaurant.

Hotel Anand : The hotel is near the bus stand and serves good food at cheaper prices. This Jain restaurant is strictly vegetarian and serves no eggs, onions and garlic.

Hotel Siddharth : This restaurant is famous for its excellent food and staff. Situated at the south of the town near Hot Springs, the hotel is recently furnished.

Hotel Centaur Hokke : The restaurant at the hotel, which serves Indian and Japanese food, is somewhat expensive.
