Buddhist Monasteries in Arunachal Pradesh

Tibetan Buddhism is mainly practised by the tribes living near Tibetan border and the Theravada Buddhism is practised by those tribal groups of Thai Burmese origin.  Buddhism is one of the most widely spread religion in the region and therefore it the region also experience a presence of Buddhist monasteries.  Some of the famous Buddhist monasteries in Arunachal Pradesh include Bomdila monastery and Tawang monastery. 

Bomdila Monastery :  Situated in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, Bomdila monastery is one of the most famous monasteries in the region.  This monastery was initiated by the 12th reincarnate of Tsona Gonstse Rinpoche, who got it built before his death.  This monastery is a depiction of the South Tibetan monastery named as Tsona Gontse monastery. 

Tawang Monastery :  Situated in north eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang lies at a distance of approximately 180 kilometres from Bomdila.  Tawang Gompa is well known for being one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in India.  It also is known for being the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama.
