Buddhist Pilgrimage Sites in India

Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism was a Prince born in the lap of luxury. One day, he was stunned and taken aback to see an old person, a sick man, and a funeral procession. His charioteer explained that all this was a part of life. Then Gautam laid his eyes on a saint and was puzzled by the calmness on his face. The charioteer explained that the saint had given up all materialistic possessions thus he was content and happy. This event left a permanent mark his mind, and one night he left the palace began his voyage to achieve the truth of life. After years he attained enlightenment and the places which he visited during his life span are now known as famous Buddhist Pilgrimage Sites in India he visited :

Lumbini : Lumbini is considered as one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites as this is the place of birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who after attaining enlightenment became the Buddha, lies in the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal. Queen Maya Devi of the Sakya clan was on her way to her parental home when she gave birth to the prince under a tree.

Bodhgaya : Another significant Buddhist pilgrimage site in India is Bodh Gaya, which is the place where Siddhartha Gautama became the Buddha as he sat on the diamond seat under the Bodhi tree in meditation.

Sarnath : Buddha gave his first important sermons on the Eightfold Path, Middle Way and the Four Noble Truth to his five fellow seekers who became the first monks of the order in the Deer Park at Sarnath making it yet another considerable place of pilgrimage of Buddhists.

Kushinagar : Buddha attained mahaparinirvana at the age of 80 becoming truly learned and attaining this rigorous aspect. He passed away in a Saal forest in Kushinagar. This is quite a significant Budddhist shrine in India.
