McLeodganj

McLeodganj, known as Upper Dharamsala as well, is a town in Himachal Pradesh which goes back to the mid 19th century when it was set up as a British garrison. It is named after David McLeod, the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab. In the present day it serves as the home of His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso. Earlier McLeodganj in Himachal Pradesh used to be home to semi nomadic Gaddi tribe, even now a sizeable number of these tribes reside in the villages around here. The Tibetan government in exile has its headquarters here. Due to great population of Tibetan refugees, it is also called “Little Lhasa”.

Tourists from all over the world are fascinated by the several attractions at Mcleodganj in India which include :

Tsuglagkhang : which is the key Buddhist temple located just opposite Dalai Lama’s residence. This temple comprises of the images of Padmasambhava, Shakyamuni, and Avalokitesvara all sitting in meditation position.

Gompa Dip Tse-Chok Ling : which is a little monastery, an image of Shakyamuni beautifies the main prayer hall, the mandals in this monastery also adds to the beauty here.

Library of Tibetan Works & Archives : tourists can visit this library at McLeodganj in Himachal Pradesh to gain knowledge and know about the Tibetan archives and works. This library contains some of the original Tibetan manuscripts and photographic records.

Along with all this, the residence of Dalai Lama remains the top tourist attraction, he lives on the south edge of town but a major part of his house has been converted into government offices and he dwells in a small part of the total complex.

Other interesting places here include the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, Namgyal Monastery, Mani Lakhang Stupa, Gangchen Kyishong, Norbulingka Institute, Nechung Monastery and Chinmaya Tapovan.
